    FROM SONYA:

I've read numerous World War II books from Melanie Dobson and the one thing I appreciate is the depth with which she writes. Not only are the places, events, and facts well researched, but she also does well at developing the characters of her stories.

Often books based on this time period, focus on the events or heroism of the actual war. But what about after the war? What did it look like for families to have to rebuild and go back to living "normal" lives? How did people cope with the things they saw or experienced...or the choices they had to make to survive?

This is a story of one family's journey towards grace and forgiveness.

Melanie's writing can be a bit on the slower side, similar to Lisa Wingate's, however, the depth of the stories is what draws me in every time. It causes me to ask myself hard questions, take a look at my own heart, and take inventory of what is there.

    FROM THE BOOK:

Grace Tonquin is an American Quaker who works tirelessly in Vichy France to rescue Jewish children from the Nazis. After crossing the treacherous Pyrénées, Grace returns home to Oregon with a brother and sister whose parents were lost during the war. Though Grace and her husband love Élias and Marguerite as their own, echoes of Grace’s past and trauma from the Holocaust tear the Tonquin family apart.

More than fifty years after they disappear, Addie Hoult arrives at Tonquin Lake, hoping to find the Tonquin family. For Addie, the mystery is a matter of life and death for her beloved mentor Charlie, who is battling a genetic disease. Though Charlie refuses to discuss his ties to the elusive Tonquins, finding them is the only way to save his life and mend the wounds from his broken past.
