How do you guys decide which books to purchase for your own bookshelves or which you just repeatedly borrow from the library and keep as long as you possibly can?

Hello Lighthouse by Sophie Blackall is one that I want to purchase for our own bookshelves. We have borrowed it multiple times and I never want to take it back.

First of all, this book is gorgeous! The illustrations are done so well and on every page there are so many details to catch your eye.

I've been learning lately about "living books". It's a term coined by homeschool legend, Charlotte Mason. It simply means, reading books that are "living or full of life". Books that teach you about a subject from a personal point of view instead of by mostly dates or facts.

It took me a minute to grasp the full meaning of the term or what it looks like for me personally. However, when I began to look at our bookshelves, I realized that the term "living books" embodies the books that we reach for every day; the ones that I want to purchase for my boys to read; the ones I want to display on our school bookshelves.

I had a whole stack of non-living books that have hardly ever been touched because they weren't in story form or fun to read together.

All that to say, Hello Lighthouse, fully embraces the term "living book". It is written in such a way that leaves you more knowledgeable about lighthouses than you were before, but more importantly, you get the learn about the people who keep the lighthouses going.

It's interesting and beautifully illustrated. What more could you ask for?
