It seems that fear of the dark is a natural thing with children, especially as they begin to use their imaginations.
When my oldest was two he would say, " The camels are coming!", when he saw a dark room. And then we would run away to hide under a blanket.
I'm not sure where the camel idea came from, but it made us laugh so hard and to this day my family still quotes it from time to time.
Helping them to understand the dark, that it can be a good thing, sometimes takes time.
Here are a few of our favorite picture books that focus on overcoming fear of the dark :

Valuable Lessons: These books address the fear of the dark. While books don't solve everything, sometimes hearing things in story form can help children connect the dots for themselves.
