Privacy Policy and Data Protection

At This New Day, I greatly value your privacy. The following info explains data that is stored and retained on this site and why we do it.

Who am I?

This New Day is a website created in 2021 by Sonya Weaver based in the United States. I share book reviews, book lists, homeschool tips, family resources, and blog posts about homeschooling.

What personal data do we collect and why do we collect it?

Information is collected via log files, cookies, leaving comments on the site, purchasing a product in my shop, or subscribing to my newsletter.

This website collects information on your name, email address, website (if you leave this in a comment), IP address, and the pages that you visited and when you visited them on the site.

All financial details are collected via Wix which does not retain any financial information once the transaction has been processed.

Like most websites around the world, I use Google Analytics (GA) to process information about the number of visitors on my site, and their behavior.

I use this information to record the number of people using This New Day and to better understand where you discover our site (from social media, google, or another site) and how you use it as well as to see how people move throughout the site.

GA records your approximate location down to town level, the type of device you are using.  None of this data can be used to identify you.

Google does record your IP address however, we don’t have access to this information and it modifies it so that you cannot be identified specifically just the area that you are in.

Comments:

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Cookies:

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites:

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics:

I want to ensure that my website contains content that is valuable and useful to my readers. To help with this I use Google analytics demographics and interest reporting features. These tools allow me to review anonymous data regarding the gender, age, and interests of website visitors and adapt my website content to better reflect my readers’ needs. Although this information is collected through your Google ad settings, it is not provided to me in a personally identifiable format.

You can opt out of Google Analytics for Display Advertising and customize Google Display Network ads using the Google Ad settings or through the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

How long do we retain your data:

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profiles. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights do you have over your data?

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data:

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Your data is not ever sent to anyone else or sold to another party.

Your contact information:

If you sign up for my email list your contact information is stored through my email service provider. This information is kept private and is not used to spam or will never be sold to another company or person. Your contact information will be used only for updates on my content, printables, and shop sales. You can request to see a report of information stored, unsubscribe, or have your information removed at any time.
